UNM
Queer Student Alliance, meets Wednesdays at 7 PM in one of the
Student Union's 3rd floor meeting rooms ( reserved rooms change). UNM QSA now focuses mostly on preparing
an annual drag show and an annual performance
festival. Its Facebbok page promotes events at
local bars (it is NOT selective in postings). Due
to a change in Constitution and name (it had been
the UNM Queer Straight Alliance),
"allies" can now feel unwelcomed. UNM
QSA assumes that ALL
students have i-phones set up to receive Facebook
posts, and has given up on its email distribution
list. UNM QSA usually posts events just an
hour or so before they occur.
Here is the group's new Mission
Statement (Spring 2016):
"The Queer Student
Alliance (QSA) at the University of New
Mexico (UNM) is a student organization
consisting of LGBTQQIA*
students, faculty/staff, community members
and their allies. We provide safe
environments, events and social opportunities
for all UNM students, affiliates, and
community members regardless of sexual
orientation or gender identity. QSA hosts
annual Drag Shows in the fall and Performance
Festivals in the spring, as well as social
outings, community events and educational
activities throughout the rest of the school
year. Our ultimate mission is to promote
awareness of LGBTQQIA*
issues via on-campus advocacy and activism,
educational presentations, community
outreach, and interdepartmental collaboration
related to homophobia, transphobia,
heteronormativity, sexual orientation, gender
identity, and equality for all."
